Enjoy your Water to Stay Hydrated

The temperature is climbing and so is my thirst level.  I’m getting a little bored of drinking the same old plain water, so what are some other ways to stay hydrated?

First off, how do we measure hydration? Since we all are different ages, genders, live in different climates, have different health issues and activity levels, our hydration needs are different too.  I think the easiest way to monitor your hydration status is to pay attention to your urine color.  If your urine is pale yellow, that means you’re well hydrated.  If it’s dark and appears more concentrated, it’s a good indication of dehydration, so drink up that water!

So how are some ways to increase your water intake:

1.    Change how you drink your water

Drink out of a different cup or glass.  Maybe even treat yourself to a new water bottle.  Use a straw.  These are all ways to make drinking water a little more fun and promote intake throughout the day too.

2.  Try adding some fresh flavors to your water

Try:

  •  Citrus (lemons, orange, lime)
  • Berries (raspberries, blueberries, strawberries)
  • Herbs (mint, basil, rosemary)
    • Bonus: rub the herbs between your fingers a little before adding to your water to release the flavor
  •  Fruits/Vegetables (cucumber, grapes, melons)

Remember there are no rules!  Try a combination if you’d like!  For example: watermelon and mint!  Make a pitcher and let it infuse in the fridge for a few hours for even more flavor.

3.  Get creative with your ice

Buying different shaped ice cube tray.  Try crushed ice instead of cubes.  Freeze fruit like berries or grapes or fruit juice and use as ice cubes.  This will provide a hint of flavor too!

4.  Add a little bubble action

Try seltzer water or sparkling water.  If you are to try these items make sure they do not contain added sugar, but are naturally sweetened.

My go to way to spice up my plain old water is to add lemon and mint to a tall glass with lots of ice and a swirly straw.  Not only does it keep me hydrated but it looks good too!  Perfect for drinking outside on my deck.

Overall stick with water, instead of tea/coffee, sports drinks, juice and soda, to keep yourself well hydrated!  Cheers!
